Marketing for general contractors

More of the right projects for general contractors, fewer wasted estimates.

We bring in homeowners with real projects and real budgets, and make sure every quote request actually reaches you.

The problem

Your most expensive marketing cost is not the ads. It is the estimates for people who were never going to sign.

A general contractor's week has a hidden line item. The drive across the county, the walkthrough, the measurements, the evening spent pricing it out, the follow-up call nobody returns. When the person on the other end only wanted a number to compare, or had a budget that was a third of what the job costs, you just did a day of unpaid work. Do that a few times a week and it becomes the biggest cost in your business that never shows up on a statement.

The good projects, meanwhile, are slipping out the other side. Most general contractors live on referrals, and referrals are great until they slow down, which they always do at some point. Then there is nothing behind them. A Google profile nobody has touched in years, a website with a handful of photos, and a quote form nobody has tested since the day it went live. We worked with a general contractor whose website quote form had not sent a single request in six months, until we fixed it. Every homeowner who filled it out believed they had reached him.

Then there are the lead sites. You pay for a homeowner's contact information, and so do other contractors, and the job goes to whoever calls first or bids lowest. It trains you to race on price for work you should be winning on trust.

And the projects are slow to decide. Somebody who asks about an addition in March may not be ready to sign until the fall. If nobody stays in touch in between, they hire the contractor who did, not the one who gave the best walkthrough.

How homeowners choose a general contractor

Nobody hires a contractor for a big project off one search. They ask neighbors and friends, then they look you up. They read your Google reviews closely, especially the ones about communication, staying on budget and cleaning up. They look for photos of finished work like theirs, and they check that you are licensed and insured.

Most get more than one bid. The contractor who replies fast, shows up when they said they would, and explains the process clearly often wins even when they are not the cheapest. The real decision is who they trust to be in their house for weeks.

Search intent is all over the place. Someone typing "general contractor near me" might want a whole-house renovation, a small repair, or a commercial build-out. Your website and ads have to say plainly which projects you take, so the wrong ones sort themselves out before they call.

What we run

What we run for general contractors

01Website

A quote form that works and asks the right questions

Project type, rough timeline, budget range and address, so you know before calling back whether it is a job you want. We test it end to end on a schedule so it never goes silent again.

02Systems

Screening before the drive out

Every request gets an instant reply, and a short text conversation confirms scope and timing before you commit to a site visit. The ones that are not a fit get a polite answer instead of an afternoon of your time.

03SEO

Project pages and a Google profile that show real work

Pages for the projects you want more of, like additions, whole-home renovations or commercial build-outs, backed by photos from your own jobs and reviews that mention them.

04Ads

Google Search and Local Services Ads for people ready to hire

General contractor is a Local Services Ads category, where you pay per lead and your reviews show on the ad. We pair it with Search ads for the specific projects you want, in the areas you actually drive to.

05Ads

Meta ads that show finished projects to homeowners nearby

Before and after work in front of homeowners in your service area, for the kind of projects people plan months ahead.

06Systems

Follow-up that lasts as long as the decision does

Bids that go quiet get checked on for weeks, not days, and past clients hear from you when it is time for the next project or a referral.

What to watch in general contracting

Local Services Ads for general contractors come with screening. Google checks the business and the owner and asks for license and insurance, and in categories where background checks apply they can cover the people who work in customers' homes, subcontractors included. It takes time up front, so we start it early. Meta works differently: ads for home repair and renovation work can fall under its housing category, which removes age targeting and requires locations to cover at least a 15 mile radius. When that happens, the ad and the landing page have to do the screening that targeting used to do.

The other trap is volume that looks good on a report. A pile of form fills from a broad ad can mean a few real projects and a lot of people wanting a free number. We judge campaigns by site visits booked and bids signed, and we turn off the ads that bring in walkthroughs you do not want.

Questions

What owners ask us.

We get most of our work from referrals. Why would we need marketing?
Referrals are the best customers you will get, and they are also out of your control. Marketing does not replace them. It keeps the schedule full when they slow down, and it makes sure that when a referral looks you up, what they find backs up what their neighbor told them.
How do we stop wasting time on estimates for people who are just shopping?
Ask before you drive. A form with the right questions, a quick text conversation about scope, timeline and budget, and ads and pages that say clearly what kind of projects you take. You will still bid jobs you lose, but far fewer that were never real.
Are Local Services Ads worth it for a general contractor?
Often, if you have reviews and someone answers the phone. You pay for leads instead of clicks, and you can dispute the ones that are not valid. The screening takes time to clear, so we start it early and run Search ads in the meantime.
How much does it cost?
It depends on your business: the projects you want, the area you cover and what is already in place. We quote it on the call once we understand all of that, so you never pay for pieces you do not need. Ad spend is separate and goes directly to Google or Meta.
