Landscaping and lawn care

Bigger design-build jobs and tighter routes for landscaping and lawn care companies.

Ads that sell patios and plantings, not just mowing, and systems that follow up on every estimate you drive out to give.

The problem

In March your phone rings nonstop. In July you are chasing estimates. In December you are wondering how to keep the crew.

Spring hits and everybody wants their yard done at once. Your crews are out from sunup, you are running estimates between jobs, and the voicemails pile up faster than you can return them. The homeowner who wanted a new patio and a full planting bed calls you on Tuesday, hears nothing by Thursday, and signs with whoever called back. That was your biggest job of the month, and you never knew it came in.

The calls that do get answered are often the wrong ones. Mowing requests from a subdivision forty minutes past your last stop. Somebody who wants a one-time cleanup for the lowest price in town. Lead sites that send the same request to five companies, so you are racing four other trucks to underbid each other. A weekly mowing account only makes money when it sits on a tight route, and every stop outside that route eats the margin in drive time and fuel.

The real money is in design-build: hardscape, retaining walls, outdoor lighting, full installs. But those customers take weeks to decide. You measure the yard, send a quote, and then it sits. Nobody follows up, because by then you are three weeks behind on everything else. Most of those quotes do not die because the price was wrong. They die because nobody asked again.

Then the season turns. Mowing slows, the phone goes quiet, and the crew you spent all year training starts looking for winter work. The fall and winter services that could carry you, like cleanups, aeration and seeding, holiday lighting or snow removal where you are, never got marketed to the customers you already had.

How homeowners pick a landscaper

Maintenance customers decide fast and close to home. They search "lawn care near me," ask in a neighborhood Facebook group or on Nextdoor, and pick someone who already works on their street, has good reviews, and answers. Seeing your truck and your sign in the neighbor's yard does half the selling.

Design-build customers decide slowly and with their eyes. They scroll photos on Instagram and Pinterest for months, save ideas, and compare portfolios. They want to see finished projects that look like the house they have, understand how the process works, and often want to know if financing is available for a bigger project. The company with the best photos and a clear process usually wins before the price comes up.

Commercial properties, HOAs and property managers buy on reliability and a clean bid. They want proof you can show up every week, the insurance to back it up, and one person to call when something is missed.

05Systems

Every estimate gets followed up

06Systems

Sell the next season to the customers you have

Past and current customers hear about fall cleanups, seeding, lighting or snow removal before the season starts, so the slow months still bring in work.

What to watch in this industry

Timing is most of the game. Ads for spring work need to start before the rush, while people are still planning, and they need to be pulled back once your crews are booked solid, or you pay for calls you cannot take. The same account should shift toward fall and winter services as the grass slows down. Setting a budget in March and forgetting it is how landscapers overpay in May and go quiet in November.

Google Local Services Ads list landscaping and lawn care as separate categories, and Google asks for the licenses and insurance your state requires before either can run. If you offer fertilizer or weed control, check what your state requires for applying those products before you advertise them. On lead quality, the biggest trap is paying for requests outside your route. A cheap lead forty minutes away is usually more expensive than a pricier one on your street.

Questions

What owners ask us.

Should I advertise mowing or bigger projects?
Usually both, but for different reasons and on different platforms. Maintenance fills routes and keeps crews busy, and people search for it on Google. Design-build is where the margin is, and people find it through photos on Facebook and Instagram. We work out the mix from your crew size and what you want more of.
What do I do about the slow season?
Start marketing the next season to your existing customers before it arrives. Cleanups, seeding, lighting and snow removal, if you offer it, are easier to sell to someone who already trusts you than to a stranger.
Are lead sites worth it for landscaping?
They can fill a gap, but the same request often goes to several companies, which turns every job into a price fight. Calls from your own ads, your map listing and your neighbors' referrals come to you alone.
How much does this cost?
It depends on your business: your crews, your services and your season. We quote it on the call once we understand how you work. Ad spend is separate and is paid directly to Meta or Google from your own account.
Can you market to Spanish-speaking customers?
Yes. Ads, pages and follow-up texts in Spanish where your market needs it, written by people who speak it.
