Marketing for painting contractors

A full painting schedule in every season, not just spring.

We fill the exterior season early, keep interior and cabinet work coming when it gets cold, and answer every estimate request before the next painter does.

The problem

Painting is a busy-season business. The money leaks out during the rush and during the slow months.

When the weather turns good, the phone starts ringing and you cannot keep up. You are on a ladder all day, estimate requests pile up, and messages sit in voicemail until the weekend. Some of those homeowners wanted a whole exterior. They booked whoever answered first.

Then the weather turns again. Exterior work slows or stops, the crew still needs hours, and the schedule has holes in it. A lot of painters treat those months as something to get through, when there is interior work, cabinet refinishing and commercial repaints that people would book if somebody gave them a reason.

The estimate itself is a trap. Painting is one of the easiest trades to price shop. A homeowner collects three numbers, and with nothing else to go on they pick the lowest or the one who got back to them first. The painter who explains the prep, the paint going on the walls and how the floors and furniture get protected gives them a reason to pay more. Most never get that chance, because the estimate goes out as a single number in a text.

Then there is everyone who asked for a quote and went quiet. Many of them were not saying no. They were waiting on a spouse, a paycheck or a dry stretch of weather. Without follow-up, those jobs go to whichever painter happens to call them back weeks later.

Count the estimate requests that sat unanswered for a day last spring. That was your competitor's schedule.

How homeowners choose a painter

People search for the job, not the trade: "exterior house painters," "cabinet painting," "interior painters near me." They look at the map first, and they judge painters heavily on photos and reviews, because the result is right there to see. Reviews that mention clean lines, careful prep and a crew that showed up on time carry the most weight.

It is also a trust purchase in a very specific way. Your crew is inside the home, around furniture, floors and sometimes kids and pets, for days. Homeowners want to know who is coming, whether you are insured, and what happens if something gets damaged.

Timing follows the weather and life events. Exterior jobs get planned ahead of the warm months, so homeowners start asking before the season opens. Interior projects follow moving in, a new baby, or getting a house ready to sell.

What to watch in painting

Painting homes built before 1978 falls under the EPA lead renovation, repair and painting rule. Anyone paid to disturb painted surfaces in those homes must be certified, sole proprietors included, and scraping and sanding before a repaint counts. If you are certified, say so on your website and in ads that run in older neighborhoods. It is a legal requirement that also sets you apart from the painters who skip it.

On the lead side, painting brings in a lot of small requests, like one bedroom or a few touch-ups, next to the jobs that actually pay. If you want exteriors and cabinets, the ads, the pages and the first reply should say so and ask about the size of the project. Local Services Ads for painters also come with business and owner checks and proof of insurance, so getting through that before your busy season matters.

Questions

What owners ask us.

How do we keep the crew busy when it gets cold?
Interior repaints, cabinet refinishing and commercial work can all run through the cold months, but people rarely think to book them unless someone reminds them. Reaching past customers, running ads for interior and cabinet work, and booking next year's exteriors early usually fills most of the gap.
Homeowners keep choosing the cheapest estimate. What can we do?
Give them something to compare besides the number. Explain the prep, name the paint, show how you protect the house, and send the estimate with photos of similar finished jobs. Reply first, too. Being fast and clear wins a lot of jobs that price alone would lose.
Should we run ads all year?
Usually, but not the same ads. Exterior campaigns work hardest ahead of and during your good-weather months, and interior and cabinet work can carry the rest of the year. When your schedule is full, we pull back spend instead of paying for calls you cannot take.
Is it worth asking every customer for a review?
Yes. For painters, reviews and photos are most of the decision. The right moment is the final walkthrough, when the customer is standing in a freshly painted room, and the request should go out on its own so it never depends on you remembering.
How much does it cost?
It depends on your business: the work you want more of, your area and what is already in place. We quote it on the call once we understand all of that, so you never pay for pieces you do not need. Ad spend is separate and goes directly to Google or Meta.
